Multi-Rotor Helicopters – What are They Used For?

When you hear the term multi-rotors what comes to mind? Or do you draw a blank? Many people, other than those who are technically knowledgeable and conversant with helicopters, quadcopters, planes, aircraft and other air transport vehicles, just shake their head when asked.

Multi-rotors are also known as multicopters. These are aircraft that utilize two or more rotors, multiple rotors or multiple propellers, rotary wings with a control system that controls the aircraft when it is in the air. Simply, multi-rotors help the aircraft hold its weight during flight and prevent it from plummeting to earth.

These aircraft can be cyclocopters, helicopters, quadcopters and many other combinations using multi-rotors. The multi-rotors have different numbers of propellers and motors from which they derive their name i.e.  a quadcopter is an aircraft with 4 propellers, a hexacopter has 6 and a octocopter  has 8 propellers.

Although the multi-rotors such as Hexacopter, Quadcopter and Octocopters may not be as efficient as an aircraft with fixed wings, coupled with their inability to use fuel engines they are still preferred by many due to their practical and useful features. The multi-rotors, helicopters and quadcopters are cheap to maintain and design, useful in aerial photography, indoor flying as a hobby and are not difficult to start.

Today, multi-rotors are used in aerial photography, motion picture photography, electronic news gathering, seismology, tourism, recreation, transport and in search and rescue. In aerial photography, the photographer takes pictures from an above ground position by using helicopters or quadcopters to capture the picture wanted, taken from a different angle from a normal picture. The technique of taking aerial photos using helicopters, radio controlled planes and multi-rotors is known as radio controlled (RC) aerial photography.

Multi-rotorsquadcopters and helicopters are also used in motion picture photography for taking moving pictures from a level higher than where the photo subjects are located to give a better photo shot.

Multi-rotor aircraft and quadcopters are often preferred for use in many RC aircraft projects because they are easy to use and manage.  Many find these small aircraft convenient and easier to maneuver. Their size is one reason why the multi-rotor aircraft are preferred over other types of aircraft.

Multi-rotor aircraft are most commonly used as an alternative to ameliorate the high costs of taking aerial pictures and videos of structures, scenery and specific sites. Helicopters and quadcopters are used to allow the angle of the subject to be captured from a different perspective. Using multi-rotor aircraft can provide a cheaper cost outcome for the photo expert that he would get if he used other options to perform the task.

During calamities, multi-rotors are a perfect and a powerful aircraft when used in search and rescue operations as they can move quickly. They can land in a small area and even go down low to a level that allows the rescuers to pick up a victim of a calamity.

They can be used for transport or for recreation. Flying helicopters and quadcopters  is recreation for some, especially if their passion is flying. These are also used as a means of transportation from one place to the other. These are just a few of the many uses of multi-rotors, helicopters and quadcopters.
